OLD GREER COUNTY WESTERN HERITAGE ASSN.

It seems we go from one crisis to another.  Just when we learn global – warming is a hoax and, after years of debate, what really killed the dinosaurs, along comes OBESITY.  Americans are obese, our children are obese, our dogs and cats are obese.  It’s in what we eat, in our genes.  Who knows?  It may even be in the air we breathe.  It’s an epidemic, a pandemic!  Something must be done!  We must find a cure!  Or one day we are all going to die!

Americans spend millions on gym memberships, stationary bicycles, exercise machines, and fad diets.  Yet still “experts” claim obesity is on the rise and it is shortening our lives (Even though we are living longer than ever).  I believe I may have the simple, cheap answer to this whole problem.  CHORES.  Contact your local rancher and ask if he has any that need to be done.  I promise he won’t charge you a dime.

Fence – mending is a continuous, year – round chore on a ranch and I’m not talking about making peace with your mother-in-law.  I have thirteen miles of perimeter fence and none of it is on flat ground.  Talk about exercise, a day or two of fence-patching, and you can donate that stair-stepper to Goodwill.

Water gaps are the ironman venue of ranch chores.  I have fifteen from which you can choose.  Spend a couple of hours in the bottom of a deep canyon in July, it’s like using a Bow-flex in a sauna.

If you are concerned about weight gain around the holidays, ranchers also have weight-loss programs for the winter months.  Winter feeding starts in mid-November and continues right on through Easter.  There’s nothing better to work off that Christmas dinner, than trying to stay ahead off eighty hungry cows carrying a fifty pound sack of feed.

Another winter exercise program offered is chopping ice.  At certain times of the year, this chore may require half a day depending on the number of water tanks or ponds and the distance between them.  This regimen is good for upper body strength and bicep development.

I’m sure there will be some questions about these exercise programs I have described.  Foremost, if you know me, could be, “It doesn’t seem to be working for you!”

But folks remember, I’m not obese, I’m stoutly-built!!!

The associations next meeting will be March 15, 7:00 pm at the Greer County Museum in Mangum, Okla.  We will finalize our schedule of events as to dates and location.  For a list of 2010 events visit our website at greercowesternheritage.com.  We will have our new chuck wagon at the Vinson Day celebration Sat., April 3 starting at 9:00 am.  We will be selling chances on art work donated by area artists, making ropes for the kids, big and small, and informing people about the association and its activities and events.

There will also be food, entertainment, and a quilt given to a lucky winner.  Spend the day in one of the earliest towns in what was once Greer County, Texas and learn about the rich, western heritage of this corner of southwest Oklahoma.  Who knows, you might meet a rancher who could start you on your new weight-loss program.
