OLD GREER COUNTY WESTERN HERITAGE ASSN.

I was watching TV this morning and a commercial aired, advertising beds for dogs.  Not just any bed but a memory foam bed so “Bowser can get the same good nights sleep you do!  Just $19.95 will buy this special bed so your dog can sleep like a baby!!”  My dog sleeps like that already.  Anywhere, anytime, sometimes all day. She certainly seems to sleep better than I do.  After hearing the announcer’s spiel, I was tempted to buy one for myself.

The ad reminded me of a crusade some years back to put clothes on cows.  What I remember about it was the leaders of the movement feared people driving on the nations highways would be traumatized by the naked cows grazing in pastures along side the road.  Impressionable children, seeing unclad bovines frolicking in green grass, might want to emulate them.  Overall, the moral laxity and laissez-faire attitude of farm livestock needed to be curtailed and brought into line with human society.

I believe I hear opportunity knocking.  I’m going to call my local animal-rights representative and ask if they want to invest in my new line of designer-label clothing for the modern bovine with discriminating taste.  I’m sending in my patent right away to thwart the ones who might want to pirate my idea.

What a boom for the local economy.  Cotton prices would skyrocket due to demand for large and extra-large sizes.  Job opportunities would abound.  Seamstresses would be busy 24 hours.  And fitters, I can envision that job itself requiring several people.  Finding and keeping salespersons might be a problem at first but once ranchers learn now this idea can endear them to the animal-rightists, the commissions could go through the roof.

And think about the vertical integration.  Hats, shoes (non-leather, of course), stain-resistant technology.  As they say in the cow business, never another poor day.

I told my loving and ever supportive wife about my plans and as usual she took a more pragmatic attitude, “You’re not going to put a dress on one cow until I get a new one!!”

                 There goes my start-up money!!

The association met April 19, 7:00 pm at the Mangum Housing Authority.  The discussion was about the Rattlesnake Derby and the Spring Trail Ride.

The booth for the Mangum Snake Derby will open at 10:00 am Saturday, April 24 in front of the Franklin Hotel one block west of the northwest corner of the Courthouse Square.  Come by and visit and learn about the association and our 2010 events.  We will be taking donations for our art work drawing, making ropes for kids of all sizes, and have the chuck wagon there to display what a trail camp looked like in the late 1800’s as trail drives came up the Western Trail following their herds of cattle.

The Spring Trail Ride will be May 14 & 15.  A primitive camping area will be available for those who wish to come Friday evening.  A pot luck supper will also be served Friday to those who come early.  Bring your favorite dish and join us.  Saturday will begin with a chuck wagon breakfast, followed by the trail ride, and end with supper that evening.  The cost will be $100/family, $40/individual, and $10/nonriders.  There will be wagon rides available for those nonriders who wish to see the beauty of this southwest corner of Oklahoma once known as Greer County, Texas.  The ride will be ½ mile west of Vinson, Okla. then north 4 1/2 miles on one of the historic ranches of Harmon County.  For information call 580-782-9230 or 580-782-2891.

The association invites everyone to attend their events and anyone may become a member.  Contact us at:  580-782-9230; 580-782-2685; 580-782-2891; 580-683-4271 or greercowesternheritage.com or P.O. Box 277 Mangum, Ok. 73554.
