Old Greer County Western Heritage Association

OLD GREER COUNTY WESTERN HERITAGE ASSN. June NR. 5 2010

All my daughters have text messaging.  They say it is much easier and faster than talking on the phone.  I wouldn’t know.  I’m not a big technology guy.  To tell the truth, I would prefer a return to the old bag phones.  They were a lot more dependable (as in “Can you hear me now!”).  I’m sure everyone has seen that cell phone ad where they compare the maps, one blue and one red representing the coverage of different companies’ area.  The southwest corner of Oklahoma once known as Greer County, Texas is white which means, “Sorry the subscriber you are trying to contact cannot be reached” because you are in cell phone H_ _ _!!

My oldest daughter and I rode together to a softball game recently and I was amazed by her ability to text and carry on a conversation at the same time.  I’m not that coordinated.  I have trouble walking and thinking at the same time.  Her fingers just flew over that key pad.  That is another season I don’t text.  Fat fingers!!  I would hate to be the one responsible for the Dow plummeting 500 points!

Another problem I have with texting is the acronyms people use.  They also shorten words by dropping vowels.  Texters claim it speeds things up.  Maybe for them.  I have trouble spelling if all the letters are there.  I could walk to their house with my reply in the time it would take me to decode the message.

My problem with all this technology can be summed up in one word, speed.  Everything needs to be faster - cars, computers, and phones.  It’s a go-go world today.  My problem is I’m too slow to catch up!!

The association will serve breakfast from 8:00 am to 10:00 am Saturday, June 19 during the Wild West Days in Mangum, Oklahoma.  Tickets are $6.00/person and can be purchased at Greer County Chamber of Commerce, Mangum Main Street, Brattons, and Dean’s Printing.  They can also be bought from any association member.

Other activities that day will be an arts and crafts show, fiddle-n contest, quilt show, barbeque, parade, and the Mangum Mounties Rodeo that evening.  Come out and join us in the southwest corner of Oklahoma once known as Greer County, Texas.
