Sitting Room

The sitting room was used for music, reading, study and games in the evenings. The staircase with a free-standing banister and a dogleg at the top grants access to the bedrooms on the second floor. The balusters/spindles are turned and carved and the base post of the staircase is a large, square piece of wood(1). The seventh spindle  from the bottom of this staircase was placed upside down, being a biblical number, it was believed  to ward off evil spirits. The wainscot was built in 1998 copying the wood pattern on the front of the stairs to provide a handrail for both sides of the stair case.
